PgBouncer is a lightweight connection pooler for PostgreSQL, multiplex hundreds of client connections onto a small pool of real database connections, with a bundled PostgreSQL and pgAdmin console included.
Every PostgreSQL connection costs a dedicated server process and memory, and the database only accepts a limited number of them. PgBouncer sits between your application and PostgreSQL, keeping a small set of real connections and lending them out as needed, a few dozen real connections can serve hundreds of clients.
A PostgreSQL instance and a pgAdmin web console are included and pre-registered on first deploy, so the pooler is usable immediately with nothing to configure.
Point PgBouncer at a database you already run instead of the bundled one, just clear COMPOSE_PROFILES and set DB_HOST/DB_PORT/DB_USER/DB_PASSWORD/DB_NAME. Your existing data is never created, migrated, or re-passworded.
The bundled pgAdmin console has both a pooled and a direct connection pre-registered, and PgBouncer's own admin console (SHOW POOLS, SHOW STATS, SHOW CLIENTS) shows exactly how many clients are active, waiting, or idle.
